Customer Buried Piping

If you own a home or business, or you’re a property owner or manager, you’re responsible for maintaining all gas lines on your side of the meter. This includes lines running from the gas meter to the appliances or equipment on your property. In some cases, the meter may be located at your property line or a distance away from your home or business.

What happens when a leak is identified?

Every time a leak is identified, we follow an established safety routine.

Our side of the system includes our distribution lines and the service lines up to the gas meter – whether the meter is at a a customer’s home or on the property line. If a leak is found on our system (e.g., on our side of the meter), our crews will respond quickly to make repairs to our system.

The customer’s side of a gas meter includes all of the piping on the other side of the gas meter, which may include a yard line running from the meter to your home or business, gas lines on the inside of a home or business, or any other gas line downstream of the gas meter. If a leak is detected on the customer’s side of the meter it is the responsibility of the property owner to make repairs to their piping or other equipment. We will try to determine the source of the leak (for example, identifying a particular appliance that is leaking) but the property owner is responsible for making any needed repairs. In the event of a leak on the customer side of the meter, appliances may be red-tagged, or service may need to be shut off, or the meter removed until necessary repairs are made.  We will restore service after repairs have been completed and all necessary inspections have been completed successfully.
